Individual Health Insurance Premium Increases?

If I have an individual health plan which costs about 0 month, then for some reason I become seriously ill, can my insurance company raise my premium? If so, how much? Is there any kind of legal limitation?

I have a pre-existing condition that is making it difficult to obtain an individual health plan. I live in Ohio. My doctor has written a letter stating that I have no symptoms, have never been hospitalized, etc. has anyone ever experienced this before and will that letter be helpful?

Health insurance is confusing enough without trying to navigate the murky waters of terms like deductible, copay and coinsurance. More at: College.Healthguru.com

I’m leaving my job to go back to school. Continuing my present health plan through COBRA will cost nearly 0 monthly. I’m 25 and a healthy moderate social drinking non-smoker. Can I do better than 0 a month?
How much will the region/city I live in affect my costs? I live in a studio for the same price my sister rents a 3 bedroom house. Is it that kind of cost of living situation? Or will the price I pay for health insurance vary more based on environmental hazards, crime rates, etc.?

Thanks, by the way, for your really helpful, specific answers. Loads of help.

I’m thinking about starting a business but I’m worried about health coverage for myself and my family. At work, our health plan is so expensive (if I had to pay for the whole thing), so I’m cautious about the cheap insurance I see advertised all over the place. Is low cost individual health insurance for real or a scam? What do I have to watch out for in looking for coverage? Thanks.
